More than 26 million ecommerce websites are tracked worldwide

The figure covers websites where BuiltWith can detect an ecommerce technology.

Siteefy's current review puts the worldwide benchmark at more than 26 million ecommerce websites. The underlying index tracks more than 2,500 ecommerce technologies and more than 2 billion unique products.

Siteefy uses 26 million-plus as the current lower-bound benchmark for the visible ecommerce web. It includes small stores, large retail sites, marketplace pages, and websites with ecommerce features. It does not mean that 26 million separate businesses are actively taking orders.

Shopify has the largest detected live-site footprint

Shopify, Wix Stores, WooCommerce Checkout, and Squarespace each appear on millions of live websites.

Current platform footprint

Shopify appears on nearly 7 million live websites

Each bar shows how many live websites BuiltWith currently detects with that ecommerce technology.

Shopify's live-site total equals 26.9% of the 26 million lower bound. The actual share of BuiltWith's larger tracked universe is lower, and this remains a scale comparison rather than market share.

BuiltWith live-site detections reviewed August 4, 2026. A site can use more than one technology, so the bars are not market shares and should not be added together.

BuiltWith detects Shopify on 6,990,890 live websites. That equals 26.9% of the 26 million lower bound. Because the tracked total is higher than 26 million, Shopify's actual share of that larger total is lower than 26.9%.

That comparison shows Shopify's scale, but it is not a market share. One website can carry more than one detected technology, and a platform footprint does not reveal how much each store sells.

A technology detection is not always a working store

WooCommerce provides a clear example of how the counting rule changes the answer.

One platform, two counts

A checkout check removes 2.93 million detections

BuiltWith warns that some websites contain WooCommerce elements without operating as ecommerce stores.

Siteefy calculation using BuiltWith's current WooCommerce and WooCommerce Checkout live-site totals. Reviewed August 4, 2026.

BuiltWith detects WooCommerce technology on 6,378,850 live websites. Its narrower WooCommerce Checkout signal appears on 3,444,722.

The difference is 2,934,128 websites, or 46% of the broad WooCommerce count. Siteefy's conclusion is simple: checkout-level detection is more useful when the question is about functioning stores, while the broader technology count is more useful for measuring the platform's reach.

Why ecommerce website totals differ

Published figures often measure different things even when they use similar wording.

A web-technology index counts what it can detect on public websites. An active-store estimate may require a working cart or checkout. A business survey counts companies, and a merchant database may count accounts. Those are four different populations.

The totals also change as websites launch, close, remove a store, move to another platform, or use several technologies at once. For that reason, the most honest current answer is more than 26 million tracked ecommerce websites, with the measurement rule stated beside the number.

This figure should not be used as a count of ecommerce companies, merchants, customers, or profitable stores. None of those can be inferred from a public technology scan alone.

Methodology

2 parts · Manually reviewed

01 - Counting

Siteefy reviewed BuiltWith's live ecommerce index and current platform pages on August 4, 2026. We kept the worldwide benchmark as a qualified 26 million-plus rather than turning it into a false exact total. Platform figures are reported as technology footprints because one website can use multiple technologies. The WooCommerce comparison subtracts the checkout count from the broad technology count and divides that difference by the broad count.

02 - Review

These values are reviewed at least every 90 days because BuiltWith's live index changes continuously. A previous approved value remains in place until its replacement and definition have both been checked.
